Theo Cárdenas Ruiz
Head of Legal and Compliance, Atento; Professor, Universidad Panamericana
Legal chapter
Theo Cárdenas Ruiz leads Legal and Compliance at Atento and teaches at Universidad Panamericana, drawing on nearly thirty years of practice. His argument is that trust has to be built before the fire starts, and that judgment, integrity and listening are what keep you in the room.

01What you're building
What are you building right now, and what does it make possible that wasn't possible before?
I am building a legal and compliance function that is closer to the business, more preventive, and more informed by data. That means creating clearer processes, developing stronger teams, and using technology to turn legal information into practical decisions. It makes it possible for Legal to participate before a problem becomes a crisis, not simply to explain what went wrong afterward.
02What it took
What did it take to get here that people don't see?
Nearly thirty years of difficult conversations, decisions made with incomplete information, crises managed quietly, and lessons learned when things did not go as planned. People often see the title or the outcome, but not the doubt, preparation, resilience, and personal responsibility behind them. It also took the humility to keep learning from colleagues, from failure, and from the students who constantly challenge the way I think.

03Who carried you
Who carried you, and what did they teach you that you still use every week?
My wife, my mentors, and the teams I have had the privilege to lead have carried me at different moments. They taught me that leadership is not about having every answer; it is about listening carefully, remaining calm when others need stability, and creating the conditions for people to do their best work. I use those lessons every week, both in the boardroom and in the classroom.
04For the leader coming up
What is the one thing you'd tell the leader coming up behind you?
Do not wait for a crisis to build trust. Learn the business, understand the people behind the decisions, and earn your place in the conversation before the fire starts. Technical expertise may get you into the room, but judgment, integrity, and the ability to listen are what will make people want you to stay.
05Adelante
Adelante means forward. Where are you taking your function, your company, or your industry next?
I want to help move the legal and compliance function from reactive control to strategic leadership. That requires lawyers who understand technology, data, operations, ethics, and human behavior, not only the law. My contribution is twofold: building that kind of function in practice and helping prepare the next generation of Mexican legal and compliance leaders to take it further.
The recognition · Legal
Theo Cárdenas Ruiz runs legal and compliance at Atento with a focus on ESG, and he teaches at Universidad Panamericana and has been a guest professor at IPADE, which means he is training the next set of Mexican compliance leaders while doing the work himself. He is also, by his own posting, properly excited about the 2026 World Cup. He is recognized in the Legal chapter for the practitioner and the professor.
