Luis Alberto Cárdenas Díaz
Subdirector General de Asesoría Jurídica, Banco Sabadell México
Legal chapter
Luis Alberto Cárdenas Díaz built the legal function at Banco Sabadell México almost from the ground up, through constant regulatory change and decisions with little margin for error. His argument is that technology is changing what a general counsel can deliver, and that the people on the team remain the foundation of all of it.

01What you're building
What are you building right now, and what does it make possible that wasn't possible before?
I’m currently building a more technology-enabled legal function, where AI and digital tools handle a significant portion of the operational work that used to consume most of our time. This efficiency frees up capacity that simply didn’t exist before, allowing my team and me to focus on higher-value strategic work: risk anticipation, business partnership, and long-term planning. Technology is genuinely transforming what general counsel can deliver inside companies today.
02What it took
What did it take to get here that people don't see?
What people don’t see is the years of building the legal function almost from the ground up inside a growing bank, while navigating constant regulatory change and high-stakes decisions with very little margin for error. It required absorbing pressure daily, making judgment calls with incomplete information, and steadily developing a team that can operate at the same standard. The visible role is leadership; the invisible part is the discipline, resilience, and continuous learning that made it sustainable.

03Who carried you
Who carried you, and what did they teach you that you still use every week?
I’ve been fortunate to have excellent mentors throughout my career: leaders with very different styles and backgrounds. That variety shaped a more complete professional approach. The ones who pushed hardest taught me the most lasting lessons: resilience under pressure and the soft skills needed to lead effectively. Those lessons still guide how I handle difficult situations and develop my team every week.
04For the leader coming up
What is the one thing you'd tell the leader coming up behind you?
Develop your own leadership style, but never lose sight of the people. They are the foundation of any high-performing team. When you genuinely care for and invest in them, they will support you. And when they believe in your ideas and projects, reaching the objectives becomes far more achievable.
05Adelante
Adelante means forward. Where are you taking your function, your company, or your industry next?
I’m focused on continuing to strengthen and protect the team while addressing what I see as the primary threat today: cyber and technological risks. In a banking industry that evolves daily, constant updating is non-negotiable. The real challenge is staying one step ahead, anticipating risks before they materialize and ensuring the legal function remains a strategic partner in that effort.
