Careers get credited to titles.

The promotion. The company. The deal on the tombstone. Almost never the person who told you to take the call, or stayed late on the thing nobody was watching.

Every career has a name behind it.

A mentor who vouched. A peer who made room. A team, a function, a bad quarter that taught you more than the good ones. That is what makes the word career mean anything.

A name is where a story starts.

Someone puts it forward. That is the entire ask, it takes a minute, and it cannot be bought.

Then we see their face.

A photograph, and the centre fills in. This is the moment a record becomes a person, and it is the one thing we cannot do without them.

And then we talk.

Not a form. A recorded conversation, unhurried, on their calendar. Nothing is written before it, because nothing worth reading could be.

What putting a name forward actually does

You cannot buy a place here, and nobody is kept here against their wishes. One word removes anyone, the same day, with no explanation asked.

Every person nominated gets a named place in this field and short-form recognition in a Counsel Collective watch list. That is unconditional. It does not depend on taking a call, answering an email, or doing anything at all.

Full-length features are chosen by our editors, and most nominations will not become one. A nomination is not a shortlist for a feature. It is recognition in its own right, and it stands on its own.

Sponsorship never changes either of those sentences. It amplifies a story that was already going to run; it has never decided whose story runs, and it never will.
