Daniel Gandarilla

Chief Administrative and People Officer, Gulf Coast Blood

People and HR chapter

Daniel Gandarilla is building a shared leadership and culture framework at Gulf Coast Blood, an organization that runs around the clock across multiple locations. His argument is that trust is built slowly and lost quickly, and that high performance and humanity are not competing priorities.

Daniel Gandarilla

01What you're building

What are you building right now, and what does it make possible that wasn't possible before?

Right now, I'm helping build a stronger leadership and culture system at Gulf Coast Blood. We're creating a shared framework of values, behaviors, and leadership expectations that connects everyone, from frontline employees to executives, around how we serve one another and our communities.

What makes this different is that culture is no longer left to chance. Employees have a common language for what great leadership and teamwork look like, managers have clearer expectations and tools, and leaders are more accountable for the experience they create for others. When done well, it makes trust scalable. It allows an organization that operates 24/7 across multiple locations to grow without losing its sense of purpose, connection, and mission.

02What it took

What did it take to get here that people don't see?

Most people see the outcomes. They don't see the years of learning through mistakes, difficult conversations, failed ideas, and moments when progress felt painfully slow.

Early in my career, I thought leadership was about having the right answers. Over time, I learned it's much more about asking the right questions, listening deeply, and creating conditions for others to succeed. The work that shaped me most wasn't the success. It was navigating uncertainty, rebuilding after setbacks, and learning that credibility is earned one decision at a time.

The lesson I carry with me is that trust is built slowly and lost quickly. Every meaningful accomplishment I've had rests on relationships that were built long before the results became visible.

Don't spend your career trying to prove your value. Spend it creating value for others.

03Who carried you

Who carried you, and what did they teach you that you still use every week?

I've been fortunate to learn from many leaders, mentors, colleagues, and team members throughout my career so it's hard to name specific people. Some bosses taught me the importance of strategic thinking, some taught me the importance of execution, some taught me resilience and to keep swinging for the fences, and some taught me humility.

The most important lesson came from leaders who understood that leadership is its own profession. They taught me that leadership begins with respect, that difficult conversations are acts of care when done well, and that integrity is revealed in the choices we make when nobody is watching.

I still use those lessons every week. Be curious. Clarify understanding. Do what you say you will do. And remember that every policy, process, and decision ultimately has an impact.

04For the leader coming up

What is the one thing you'd tell the leader coming up behind you?

Don't spend your career trying to prove your value. Spend it creating value for others.

Titles, recognition, and achievements matter far less than the impact you have on the people around you. Focus on building trust. Invest in relationships. Be willing to have the hard conversations. Keep learning. And remember that leadership is not about being the most important person in the room. It's about helping others become more capable, more confident, and more successful because you were there.

If you can do that consistently, the opportunities will take care of themselves.

05Adelante

Adelante means forward. Where are you taking your function, your company, or your industry next?

I believe the future of People & Culture is moving beyond HR as a support function and toward HR as a builder of organizational capability.

The challenges facing healthcare and community-based organizations are too complex to solve through policies alone. We need cultures that develop leaders, create trust, embrace technology responsibly, and empower people to do their best work. I am particularly excited about the potential of data, AI, and workforce insights to remove administrative burdens and allow leaders to spend more time doing what matters most: connecting with people.

My hope is to help create organizations where high performance and humanity are not competing priorities. The future isn't choosing between results and people. The future is recognizing that sustainable results come from investing in people, building trust, and strengthening the communities we serve.
